⏎ Return to the main article about PoE2 end-game mechanics
Expedition is one of the major Endgame mechanics available for players who have reached Atlas of Worlds. It occurs naturally on some Maps, but you can also use special Tablets after completing one of the many Towers to apply it to nearby Maps.
To start the Expedition encounter approach the excavation site's NPC, examine the remnants, and start placing the explosives. The exhumed monsters will be exceedingly stronger due to the extra modifiers you bestowed upon them. Some of these modifiers can cause them to be exempt from a specific type of damage, so if you deal exclusively, say fire damage, for example, be extremely careful not to make them fire-immune. The excess of Elemental Penetration combined with Elemental Damage is exceptionally dangerous for all builds. After this extensive unearthing, open the Excavated Chests for more loot.
Your main strategy is usually to get the most out of each encounter and slay the powerful Runic Monsters. Runic Monsters can drop Logbooks; aim for modifiers that would maximize the number of Rare Runic Monsters and the Quantity of their loot. Upgrade them with Detailed Records passive as soon as possible to loot even more Logbooks - that's where the real money is. The Runic Artifacts are not as valuable in the current patch.
A Logbook opens portals to a large Expedition area. Talk to Dannig to get access to it. There are 5 Tiers of difficulty to it, increased each time you expand your Expedition Atlas Skill Tree. To get the Expedition Atlas Skill Tree Points, you have to defeat Olroth at your highest unlocked difficulty level. The difficulty affects Area Level (it's increased by 1 for every +2 to Logbook difficulty, starting at difficulty 1), which makes monsters there stronger. Increasing difficulty also takes away your Portals, making the challenge expeditingly tougher.
Runic Monsters can be deadly, but one should be also prepared to face Olroth. It's one of the pinnacle bosses. It's uncommon to get him to spawn, so if you're lucky enough to have one (its location is marked with a big skull on your map), be sure to reach him. Most profit-driven players will actually omit the Logbook if they see no Olroth since its loot is so valuable.

Listed Unique Items can only be looted from Olroth, Origin of the Fall. This boss has around a fifth of a chance to spawn during the Logbook Expedition with an area level of 79 or above. You have to increase the Expedition difficulty level to 4 (that's the highest one) to have any chance for the boss to drop one of these items. The most valuable drop is also the rarest; that's Heroic Tragedy. The second rarest and second most prized drop is Olroth's Resolve. A well-rolled Svallin can be good too. All the other drops, be it from the Map encounters or Logbooks, are like pocket change in comparison, although that may change in the later versions of the game.
