The Exalted Orb is one of the most iconic and sought-after currency items in Path of Exile 2. Its primary purpose is to add an additional modifier to a Rare item—up to six modifiers on most gear and up to four on Jewels. With the removal of deterministic crafting, adding random modifiers is often the only way to upgrade your Items. In most cases you will need 2 or 3 modifiers to finish an Item, so you will naturally need a lot of Exalted Orbs, causing a constant demand for this Orb. For this reason, it became the default Currency Orb of Trading in Path of Exile 2.
How to get Exalted Orb? This question haunts all Path of Exile 2 players. As with all other Orbs, it can drop from any monster you slay or chest you open. Bosses and Rare Enemies have a significantly higher chance to reward you with a Currency Orb, including the Exalted Orb. It is fairly common even during the early levels of the campaign. However, if you participate in economy most of your Exalts will be acquired by selling and exchanging your other Items for this universal Currency.
Functionality - the main usage of Exalted Orb is to simply add a modifier to your Item. Remember that each Item can have only 3 Prefixes and 3 Suffixes. On its own, this method is simple and doesn't require any planning ahead. You can however use Omens to cause your Exalted Orb to add only Prefix or Suffix, which can be paired with the same set of Omens for Orb of Annulment. This method is very expensive but can produce very powerful Items.
In Trade - the Exalted Orbs are the primary currency used for trading between players. There is an endless demand for adding modifiers to your gear that offer the supply, so the prices can stay quite balanced. You will always need to make decision whenever you want to use your Exalted Orb on your current piece of Gear or use it for buying an already finished product. Beware, as the perfect equipment can cost hundreds of Exalted Orbs, as obtaining it can be very tedious and resource-consuming.
