Vaal Orb – General Information

The Vaal Orb is one of the most unpredictable and risky currency items in Path of Exile. When used on an item, it corrupts it—permanently disabling any future modifications—and may apply one of several random effects. For this reason, players often treat it as a final step in item crafting, used when there's a chance to add powerful Vaal implicits or transform the item in a beneficial way. However, the odds of "bricking" an item are high, making Vaal Orbs a true gamble.

Below are the possible outcomes when using a Vaal Orb:

  • Nothing changes – item is only marked as Corrupted
  • Socket colors randomly turn white – extremely rare to affect all sockets
  • Item is rerolled into a random rare – may ruin socket/affix setup
  • Item gains a Vaal implicit modifier – powerful effects like +1 Arrow, +1 Chain, curse on hit, etc.
  • Unique item transforms into another Vaal-exclusive unique
  • Maps: reroll affixes, become unidentified, or upgrade to Tier 16 Vaal Temple
  • Gems: can become Vaal Gems, increase level/quality, or be corrupted without change
  • Jewels: may gain Vaal implicits or transform into rare/Vaal Unique Jewel
  • Strongboxes: corrupted items drop, often pre-identified

Vaal Orbs drop from monsters, have a slightly lower drop rate than Chaos Orbs, and can also be acquired through vendor recipes. They’re widely used but should be applied with full awareness of the risks involved.
