Claws of Thunder Assassin Build Guide for PD2
Build charges, dive into enemy groups, and flood the screen with Lightning in a fast and highly active melee playstyle.Claws of Thunder Assassin Build
Last Update: September 29, 2026
Introduction
The Claws of Thunder Assassin is a fast-paced Lightning Martial Arts build built around charging powerful electrical attacks and releasing them directly inside enemy packs. Claws of Thunder combines strong single-target Lightning Damage with wide-area effects from its higher charge levels, allowing the Assassin to pressure both nearby enemies and larger groups with every attack cycle. High Attack Speed, Attack Rating, Lightning Skill Damage, and additional Martial Arts Skill Levels all contribute heavily to the Build's performance, while Dragon Flight gives it excellent mobility and lets you move directly from pack to pack.
The Build can be developed as a focused Lightning melee Assassin or expanded with additional defensive and summon support through the Shadow tree. Strong Claws, high Skill Levels, and Enemy Lightning Resistance reduction push its Damage much further in the endgame, while defensive tools such as Fade, Weapon Block, and Shadow summons help stabilize aggressive telestomp-style Mapping. Once the core attack speed and Lightning scaling are in place, Claws of Thunder becomes a highly active melee build with explosive pack clear, strong burst Damage, and a distinctly aggressive Martial Arts playstyle.
Recommended Breakpoints
- Faster Hit Recovery (FHR): 48% is a comfortable baseline, while 86% is a nice target
- Attack Speed (IAS): IAS directly affects how quickly you build and release Claws of Thunder charges. The exact requirement depends on your Claw base and Burst of Speed, so fast bases such as Greater Talons and Runic Talons are particularly valuable. Adjust Burst of Speed and gear IAS around the fastest practical attack breakpoint for your exact setup
- Attack Rating: Aim for roughly 8,000-10,000 AR as a practical minimum for Mapping, with 10,000-12,000+ feeling much more comfortable against high-level Map monsters and bosses. Claws of Thunder provides a substantial built-in Attack Rating bonus, so prioritize maintaining a reliable hit chance rather than chasing an arbitrary sheet value
Stat Allocation
- Strength: Enough to meet gear attribute requirements
- Dexterity: Enough to meet gear requirements, or more if using a Shield and pursuing Max Block
- Vitality: Invest all remaining Points
- Energy: Nothing
Most of the Build's offensive scaling comes from Claws of Thunder Skill Levels, Lightning Skill Damage, and Enemy Lightning Resistance reduction, so additional Strength or Dexterity provides relatively little once equipment requirements are covered. Dual-Claw setups can keep Dexterity fairly low and rely on Weapon Block, while Shield variants may require considerably more Dexterity to maintain a high Block chance.
Pros
- Physical portion of the attacks provides some additional coverage against Lightning-resistant enemies
- Very fast movement and attack speed with Burst of Speed
- Can be played with dual Claws for more offense or a Shield for stronger defense
- Does not require an extremely high physical Damage Weapon to become effective
Cons
- Single-target Damage is much weaker than its pack-clearing performance
- Attack Rating must remain high enough for charge attacks to connect consistently

Skill Trees

The Claws of Thunder Assassin develops very naturally through the Martial Arts tree, because most of its Damage comes directly from Skill Levels. Early on, focus on fast Claws, enough Attack Rating to hit consistently, and a few utility Points in Burst of Speed so the Build already feels responsive before the full package is completed.
Once Claws of Thunder becomes available, it should quickly take over as your main attack. Build around it together with Dragon Claw, which provides its direct synergy and also gives you a useful physical option against Lightning-resistant enemies. Claw Mastery comes next, improving both Attack Rating and the physical portion of your attacks, which makes progression much smoother as monster Defense increases.
The later Points are where the Build starts to feel much more polished. Bring Dragon Flight up to around 10 hard Points to reduce its cooldown and make pack-to-pack movement significantly faster, then invest around 15 Points into Burst of Speed to support the desired attack breakpoint without overcommitting into diminishing returns. Weapon Block, Fade, Cloak of Shadows, and Shadow Warrior round out the setup with efficient defensive utility.
By the time you start serious Mapping, the Build should already have its full offensive core in place, while Dragon Flight and Burst of Speed turn it into a much faster and more fluid melee mapper. From there, remaining Points can be adjusted between Weapon Block, Shadow support, or additional utility depending on how aggressive you want the final setup to feel.
Gear
A strong Magic or Rare/Crafted Claw is the highest-ceiling Weapon for the Claws of Thunder Assassin. Look for a fast Greater Talons or Runic Talons base with additional Martial Arts or Assassin Skills, +Claws of Thunder, and Increased Attack Speed. A combination such as +3 Martial Arts and +3 Claws of Thunder can provide enormous Skill scaling from a single slot. Bartuc's Cut-Throat is the best straightforward Unique alternative, combining up to +4 relevant Skill Levels with Faster Hit Recovery, Attack Rating, physical Damage, Life Leech, Strength, and Dexterity.
The off-hand determines how aggressive the Build becomes. A second Bartuc's Cut-Throat or another high-Skill Magic/Rare Claw provides the strongest dual-Claw setup and gives access to Weapon Block, while Jade Talon is an excellent defensive Claw when Resistances are difficult to cap. A Stormshield setup gives up some offensive Skill Levels for Max Block and heavy Physical Damage Reduction, making it particularly attractive for Hardcore or dangerous high-density Maps.
Griffon's Eye is the strongest offensive Helmet for most setups. Both +Lightning Skill Damage and -Enemy Lightning Resistance directly support Claws of Thunder because the Assassin herself deals the Lightning Damage, and the additional Skill Level pushes the entire Martial Arts package further. Kira's Guardian provides a more defensive alternative with elemental resistance reduction, Resistances, FHR, and useful protection, while a high-end Rare or Crafted Assassin Circlet with +2 Skills, sockets, Attributes, and Resistances can solve several gearing requirements at once. Current CoT mechanics properly benefit from +% Lightning Skill Damage.
For Body Armour, Ormus' Robes is one of the strongest pure Damage options because its Lightning Skill Damage directly scales Claws of Thunder. Enigma offers a more balanced Mapping setup with +2 Skills, Strength, Faster Run/Walk, Life scaling, Magic Find, and Blink charges, while Chains of Honor is excellent when Resistances and survivability are the main concern. Arkaine's Valor is another durable alternative when mobility is already covered through Dragon Flight and Burst of Speed. Ormus currently provides up to 15% elemental Skill Damage, although its FCR has been reduced compared with older versions.
For Gloves, strong Rare or Crafted Martial Arts Gloves with Increased Attack Speed are usually the most flexible endgame option, especially when they also provide Attributes, Resistances, or sustain. Lightning Magefist offers additional Lightning Skill scaling and is attractive when your attack breakpoint is already secured elsewhere. Dracul's Grasp is a more sustain-oriented option with strong Life Leech, Life After Each Kill, Strength, and Open Wounds.
For the Belt, Arachnid Mesh is the straightforward offensive choice because +1 Skill directly improves Claws of Thunder and the rest of the Build. Verdungo's Hearty Cord provides a considerably stronger defensive package with Vitality, FHR, and Physical Damage Reduction, while String of Ears is another strong option when additional Leech and physical mitigation are more valuable than another Skill Level. Goldwrap can also be useful during progression when its IAS helps complete an attack breakpoint.
Shadow Dancer is one of the best Boots options for the dual-Claw version. Shadow Discipline levels improve skills such as Burst of Speed and Weapon Block, while 30% FHR and up to 30 Dexterity provide substantial defensive value. Waterwalk is excellent for a Shield/Max Block variant because of its Life and Dexterity, while strong Rare or Crafted Boots with Faster Run/Walk, FHR, and multiple Resistances can be the easiest way to complete the character's defensive requirements.
For the Amulet, a Magic +3 Martial Arts Amulet provides the highest simple offensive Skill bonus. A high-end Rare or Crafted +2 Assassin Amulet with Attributes, Resistances, Life, and other useful modifiers offers a more balanced endgame solution, while Mara's Kaleidoscope remains an excellent all-around choice when the Build needs additional Resistances. IAS corruptions become particularly valuable here if they allow you to remove Attack Speed from another slot.
For Rings, Raven Frost is one of the most practical choices because Cannot Be Frozen, Attack Rating, and Dexterity all matter on a melee charge-based Assassin. The second slot can use Stone of Jordan or Bul-Kathos' Wedding Band for another Skill Level, while a strong Rare/Crafted Ring with Attack Rating, Life or Mana Leech, Attributes, and Resistances gives more flexibility. If Cannot Be Frozen is already supplied elsewhere, both Ring slots can be optimized much more aggressively.
Charms
For the Claws of Thunder Assassin, both Martial Arts Grand Charms and +3% Lightning Skill Damage Large Charms are strong offensive choices. Martial Arts Skillers improve Claws of Thunder together with Dragon Claw and the rest of your Martial Arts package, while Lightning Damage Charms become increasingly attractive once your Skill Levels are already high and you want to push the elemental portion of the Build further.
An Assassin Hellfire Torch and Annihilus should form the foundation of the inventory. From there, fill most of the remaining space with either Martial Arts Skillers, Conduit Large Charms, or a mixture of both depending on your final setup and available secondary rolls.
Use Small Charms to finish Life, Resistances, Faster Hit Recovery, and Attack Rating requirements. Additional AR can be especially useful against high-level Map monsters, while FHR Charms help reach the 48% or 86% targets without forcing weaker equipment choices.
Mercenary
An Act 2 Mercenary with Infinity is the strongest general support option for the Claws of Thunder Assassin. Conviction reduces enemy Lightning Resistance and Defense at the same time, improving both the elemental Damage from Claws of Thunder and the reliability of your melee hits. This makes Infinity particularly valuable in high-tier Maps and against Lightning-resistant enemies.
A defensive aura such as Defiance works very well because the Assassin already provides her own movement and attack speed through Burst of Speed and Dragon Flight. More offensive Act 2 variants can also work if your survivability is already comfortable.
- Infinity (Weapon)
- Andariel's Visage, Vampire Gaze, or another durable Mercenary Helmet (Helmet)
- Fortitude or Templar's Might (Armour)
- Steelrend or strong Rare/Crafted Gloves with sustain (Gloves)
- String of Ears or Verdungo's Hearty Cord (Belt)
- Goblin Toe or strong Rare Boots with Resistances and defensive modifiers (Boots)
Final Thoughts
Claws of Thunder starts to shine when everything happens quickly: Dragon Flight drops you directly into the next pack, Burst of Speed keeps the attack cycle tight, and each charged release floods the area with Lightning Damage. The result is a Build that feels much more aggressive than most Assassin builds.
There is also plenty of room to tune the character around your own comfort level. Dual Claws, Shield variants, Martial Arts Skillers, Lightning Damage Charms, and different defensive setups can all push the Build in slightly different directions. With enough Skill Levels and resistance reduction, Claws of Thunder develops into a fast, explosive melee mapper with a very distinctive rhythm.
