Introduction

Ritual is one of the most polarizing Endgame mechanics for new players, since it requires a good understanding and proper use of juicing mechanics to be profitable. Its basic version is incredibly limited, which makes for a very poor first impression, but it's the only source of valuable Omens, which are always necessary for Endgame Crafting, making it one of the best farms in the end.

The basic premise of Ritual is to find and conquer Ritual Altars scattered across the Map, each guarded by packs of monsters, often including the Map Boss. Upon defeating them, you can activate the Altar, which will resurrect slain Enemies to fight you once again. Each successive Altar resurrects all the previously sacrificed monsters, escalating the difficulty and rewards. Upon completion, a purple swarm will indicate the location of the next closest Altar.

The monsters slain that way drop a bit of loot at the end of the encounter, but their main purpose is the Tribute you gain from each kill, scaled heavily by Monster Rarity type. After completing a Ritual, you can interact with the Altar again to check the available Favours, which consist of random Unique Gear pieces and Omens. Unused Tribute can be sacrificed to generate Audience With The King.

Buying Favours costs Tribute. In most cases, you won't be able to buy it outright, but can defer it, ensuring it will appear again in future Rituals for a lower price. You can defer an Item multiple times. Failing to defer an Item at least once per Map will revert one instance of the discount. If you fail to defer it when all the discount is gone, it will no longer reappear in future Rituals. The Tribute is bound to each Map, so you can't save it later. It is the major pain point of this mechanic, since the basic encounter will net you roughly 2000-3000 Tribute, while a fully juiced one can end with over 20 000.

Another important aspect is Rerolling the Favours, which grants you a new set of rewards. By default, you can Reroll only twice per Map, and it costs 1000 Tribute, but with Ritual Tablets you can Reroll more times or make it cheaper. Most of the offered rewards are worthless, but occasional special Omens can cost multiple Divine Orbs, so having more opportunities to get them is incredibly important.

By default, you will encounter only 3 Ritual Altars per Map. Each Ritual Tablet will add one Altar, for a total of 6 in City Biomes. It scales gained Tribute exponentially, making it a vital part of your strategy.

Ritual Questline and Pinnacle Bosses

As with every endgame mechanic, you should start with completing the special Questline to unlock all functions and Atlas Tree Points. It will also teach you the basic gameplay loop of Rituals.

  1. Locate and travel to Caer Tarth, to the Southwest of the Citadel. You can also complete any Ritual on your Maps and talk with Aoife to unreveal the location on your Atlas.
  2. You will be tasked with earning An Audience With the King, which you can do by completing nearby Rituals. Each Map with a native Ritual will also grant you Passive Points, but it is a good idea to save them for later, so you can come back with a full set of Ritual Tablets for maximum efficiency.
  3. Once you acquire the Audience, you can use it to reveal the nearby Crux of Nothingness and fight the King in the Mist, which drops Head of the King upon defeat.
  4. Come back to Caer Tarth to begin the Rite of the Nameless by placing the Head on the Effigy. The Questline variant allows you to pick only a few nearby Maps to do so.
  5. The Rite of the Nameless adds guaranteed rewards or Tribute modifiers, but also spawns previously fought Bosses and other monsters within the chain. During early progression, it is recommended to keep it safe and complete it as fast as possible, but if you are up for a challenge, you can add some Ritual Tablets to ramp up rewards.
  6. Each completed Rite will drop Fragments used to fight the final Boss. Once you acquire all 5 Fragments, travel to Caer Tarth and challenge The Bodah. Upon defeat, you will be rewarded with 6 Ritual Atlas Passive Points.
You can acquire the remaining Atlas Passive Points by fighting the Bodah again. To do so, collect 5x Call of the Shadows by completing the Rite of Nameless or buying from Currency Exchange.

Rite of the Nameless

You will always want to run Rituals as Rites of the Nameless, but to do so you will need a surplus of Heads of the King, which can be traded via Currency Exchange. You can get them by holding the Audience With the King in your inventory and hunting for Cruxes of Nothingness on your Atlas, but they are quite rare and not self-sustaining.

Icon Notable Ritual Items
Call of the Shadows - you need 5 of them to fight The Bodach. Useful for catching up Atlas Passive Points or farming Boss-only Unique Items.
Head of the King - begins the Rite of the Nameless in Caer Tarth. Quite expensive, but always worth it.
An Audience with the King - reveals the Crux of Nothingness on the Atlas, allowing you to get the Head of the King. Very cheap, as the bottleneck lies in finding Crux on Atlas.

Upon starting the Rite, you will select a few Maps. Each Map randomly grants a specific Item, or empowers further Rituals within the Chain. You can reset the selection by closing the Atlas window, which allows you to hunt for better rewards.

Recommended strategies

For combat, there is only one rule: never stand still. There will be lots of enemies, even more ground effects or on-death explosions, and occasionally powerful Bosses will spawn directly on top of you. It is a mechanic that heavily favours high defense and AoE coverage.

The Ritual has a high-stakes loot profile. Most of the rewards you get are worthless, while the few rare Omens can cost multiple Divine Orbs. Your goal is to cycle through as many reward windows as possible, while keeping enough Tribute to be able to Deffer the valuable Omens once they finally appear. For this reason, you should avoid wasting your Tribute on "almost good" Omens. Their Tribute cost is often not reflected by their market price.

To get better rewards, you will need to use at least 3 Ritual Tablets, ideally 4 in the City Biomes. The Unique Freedom of Faith Tablet is heavily recommended, since it doubles your possible Rerolls. You shouldn't worry about generic Item drop reward modifiers such as Monster Effectiveness, and instead focus on making Omens more likely to appear, getting more Tribute, reducing the Tribute you spend, or getting additional Rerolls.

What Items should you Defer?

Rituals can offer only 2 types of Items: Uniques and Omens. Unfortunately, you can't currently apply your Loot Filter to the Ritual window, although it should be added in the near future. Until that time comes, you will have to recognise expensive Uniques manually.

Fortunately, the majority of your profit comes from Omens, which are much easier to distinguish. As a general rule, look for purple colors and high Tribute cost. They are used in high-end Crafting, making their price adequately high. The notable mention goes to Omen of Chaotic Quantity and Rarity, which are quite common, making them a great filler to spend your Tribute if you didn't get any of the expensive Omens.

Low investment Ritual alternatives

The initial Cost of Tablets can be quite high, and running 6-mod Waystones poses a significant danger for undergeared characters. At first, you can use Irradiated Tablets to add a random mechanic to your Map and significantly improve the drop rate of their specific Tablet types. In case of Ritual, even a normal-quality Tablet can be worth decent money, and you only need to kill the initial monsters guarding the altar. If your Map has only 3 Altars, it is generally not worth your time to engage with it at all.

Using only 1 or 2 Ritual Tablets is usually not worth it. You may find a good Omen or two, but it is not very likely, and it is still very time-consuming to complete all Altars. Other Endgame mechanics are much more beginner-friendly, allowing you to get a steady source of Currency while progressing your character at the same time. You can find more info about them below.

Ritual Atlas Tree

The Atlas Passive Tree greatly improves your rewards. It grants additional Rerolls, improves your Tribute gains by spawning more monsters, and increases your chances for valuable Unique Items. You should complete the intro Questline and farm up remaining Points before committing to this farm.

Important choice Notables:

  1. Invigorated Sacrifices: Skills from Ritual Altars deal 50% increased Damage, Ritual Altars offer 10% increased number of Favours - more chances for valuable Omens.
  2. Traveller's Woe: Tainted - it is not important on its own, but the next Notable improves the chances for Uniques to be Belt, meaning more chances for Headhunter or Mageblood.
