Zealer Paladin Build Guide for PD2
Want a Paladin that feels fast, durable, and simple? Zealer might just be it for you!Zealer Paladin Build
Last Update: September 25, 2026
Introduction
The Zeal Paladin is a classic physical melee build built around rapid consecutive attacks, strong Weapon Damage, and the powerful bonuses from Fanaticism. Zeal delivers a fast series of strikes that works especially well against elites, bosses, and tightly packed enemies, while Holy Shield provides excellent Block Chance and makes the Paladin naturally durable in close combat.
The core setup revolves around Zeal, Sacrifice, Fanaticism, and Holy Shield, with Joust adding the mobility needed for fast Mapping. The Build scales heavily with the quality of its Weapon and gains a lot from Deadly Strike, Crushing Blow, Life Leech, Attack Rating, and Physical Resistance reduction. Sources of Amplify Damage are especially valuable in harder content, helping the Paladin maintain strong Damage against resistant enemies.
With the right gear, the Zealer becomes a fast, durable, and very consistent melee character that combines excellent boss Damage with smooth Map progression. Its appeal comes from direct, responsive combat and the strong synergy between offense, mobility, and the Paladin’s naturally solid defenses.
Recommended Breakpoints
- Faster Hit Recovery (FHR): 27% is a comfortable baseline, while 48% is recommended
- Increased Attack Speed (IAS): Always calculate this around your specific Weapon base and Fanaticism level. Reaching the fastest practical Zeal breakpoint should be one of the main gearing priorities
- Attack Rating: Around 8,000-10,000 AR should be treated as the minimum practical range, while 10,000+ is a more comfortable target for endgame Maps.
- Block Chance: 75% Max Block is highly recommended for the standard Shield setup with Holy Shield
Stat Allocation
- Strength: Enough to meet gear attribute requirements
- Dexterity: Enough to reach 75% Block Chance with Holy Shield active
- Vitality: Invest all remaining Points
- Energy: Nothing
The standard Zealer benefits greatly from Max Block, since the Build spends almost all of its time fighting directly inside enemy packs. Holy Shield makes reaching 75% Block considerably easier and also improves the Paladin's overall defensive profile. Always activate Holy Shield before determining how much Dexterity you actually need, then invest the remaining Points into Vitality.
Pros
- One of the best boss and elite killers
- Strong Life Leech and sustain during continuous Zeal attacks
- Excellent defensive potential with Holy Shield and Max Block
- Can deal with Physical Immunes effectively through Amplify Damage support
Cons
- Requires sufficient Attack Rating against high-defense enemies and bosses
- Pack clearing is more dependent on melee positioning and splash coverage

Skill Trees

The Zeal Paladin can be leveled directly as a physical melee Build from the beginning. Start investing into Zeal as soon as possible and use it as your main attack throughout progression. Early Points in Sacrifice are also valuable because they immediately improve Zeal through its synergy, while one-point utility Auras can be picked up whenever they become available.
Once Fanaticism is unlocked, it should become your main Aura and one of the highest priorities. The combination of Zeal and Fanaticism provides the Attack Speed, Attack Rating, and physical Damage needed to carry the Build comfortably through Nightmare. Continue developing Sacrifice alongside it, since its synergy provides a major increase to Zeal Damage without changing the core playstyle.
Holy Shield becomes increasingly important as you move into Hell and Maps. Maxing it greatly improves Block Chance and overall survivability, allowing the Paladin to remain directly inside packs while maintaining constant Zeal attacks. Take Joust early for mobility and gradually raise it to around 5 hard Points, as shown in this setup, for smoother pack-to-pack movement and a more responsive Mapping rhythm.
The final priority is straightforward: max Zeal, Sacrifice, Fanaticism, and Holy Shield, then invest several Points into Joust. Keep the remaining utility Auras and prerequisites at one Point unless your equipment creates a specific need for more Attack Rating or defensive support. With the main four Skills completed, additional Points can be adjusted around your gear and the content you plan to run.
Gear
A high-roll Ethereal Schaefer's Hammer with multiple sockets is one of the strongest endgame choices, especially when filled with ED/IAS Jewels to reach the desired Zeal breakpoint. Death in an Ethereal Berserker Axe is another excellent option, offering very high physical Damage, Deadly Strike, and Crushing Blow. Strong Rare or Crafted Ethereal Weapons can also compete when they combine high Enhanced Damage, IAS, useful sockets, and ideally an Amplify Damage proc.
For the Shield, Head Hunter's Glory is especially attractive because it provides a direct source of Amplify Damage, which solves one of the biggest problems of a pure physical Zealer. A well-corrupted Alma Negra offers a more offensive Paladin-specific alternative, while Herald of Zakarum remains an excellent all-round option with Skills, Block, Resistances, and defensive utility. Exile can also be considered for a more defensive setup, particularly when Amplify Damage is supplied by the Mercenary or another item.
Guillaume's Face is one of the most natural Helmet choices because the Build benefits heavily from Crushing Blow and Deadly Strike. A socketed or well-corrupted version scales extremely well into bosses and difficult Maps. Veil of Steel is a strong defensive alternative for Uber-oriented setups where Resistances and survivability matter more than maximum offensive output.
For Body Armour, Fortitude remains one of the best general-purpose options thanks to its large Enhanced Damage bonus and solid defensive stats. A high-end Crafted Armour with Enhanced Damage and Physical Damage Reduction can outperform it in specialized setups, while Shaftstop is a very strong defensive alternative when survivability is the priority.
Highlord's Wrath is the standard offensive Amulet. Its IAS and Deadly Strike fit the Build perfectly and often help solve the final Zeal breakpoint without sacrificing Damage. Atma's Scarab becomes very valuable when you do not already have a reliable source of Amplify Damage from your Shield, Weapon, or Mercenary.
For Gloves, Soul Drainer is one of the strongest offensive options, especially when paired with a physical Damage-focused setup. Dracul's Grasp offers excellent sustain, while Blood Crafted or Rare Gloves with IAS, Life Leech, Resistances, and useful defensive modifiers can be extremely competitive.
The Belt slot is usually filled by String of Ears or Verdungo's Hearty Cord for Physical Damage Reduction and survivability. Nosferatu's Coil is a strong alternative when additional IAS is required to reach the chosen Weapon breakpoint. This is one of the slots that should be adjusted around the Weapon rather than treated as fixed BiS.
Gore Rider is the most natural Boots choice thanks to its combination of Deadly Strike, Crushing Blow, and Open Wounds.
For Rings, Raven Frost remains extremely useful for Cannot Be Frozen, Dexterity, and Attack Rating. The second slot can use a Wisp Projector for general utility or a high-quality Rare/Crafted Ring with Maximum Damage, Attack Rating, Life Leech, Strength, and Resistances. If Cannot Be Frozen is obtained from a corruption elsewhere, both Ring slots can be dedicated to offensive Rare/Crafted options.
Charms
For the Zeal Paladin, both Maximum Damage / Attack Rating Charms and Paladin Combat Skill Grand Charms are viable. Max Damage/AR usually gives stronger pure physical scaling on well-geared setups, while Combat Skillers also improve Zeal, Sacrifice, Holy Shield, and Joust.
Start with a Paladin Hellfire Torch and Annihilus, then fill the remaining inventory with whichever option better fits your setup. Use Small Charms for Life, Resistances, FHR, and additional Attack Rating.
Mercenary
An Act 5 Might Mercenary is one of the most natural support choices for a physical Zealer. Might directly increases your physical Damage, while weapons such as Cranium Basher or The Gavel of Pain provide a reliable source of Amplify Damage, helping against Physical-resistant and immune enemies. This setup fits particularly well when the Paladin is already supplying Fanaticism himself.
- Cranium Basher or The Gavel of Pain (Weapon)
- Vampire Gaze or Andariel's Visage (Helmet)
- Fortitude, Shaftstop, or another high-defense Mercenary Armour (Armour)
- durable Rare/Crafted Gloves with IAS and sustain (Gloves)
- String of Ears or Verdungo's Hearty Cord (Belt)
- Rare Boots with Resistances and defensive modifiers (Boots)
Final Thoughts
The Zeal Paladin combines rapid physical attacks, high Block, strong sustain, and excellent single-target pressure into a very dependable melee setup. Once the Weapon, Attack Rating, and IAS breakpoint are properly solved, the Build becomes fast, durable, and extremely consistent in close combat.
Its strength comes from how well all of its core mechanics work together: Fanaticism boosts speed and accuracy, Holy Shield keeps the Paladin safe inside packs, and Amplify Damage support helps maintain strong physical output against resistant enemies.
